Cancellation & downgrade
Cancelling a subscription
Cancel anytime from Settings → Plan & Usage → Manage subscription (opens the Polar customer portal).
Cancellation is scheduled at the end of your current billing period — your plan stays active until that date. The Plan & Usage screen shows "cancels on <date>" once a cancellation is pending.
When the period ends:
- Your account drops to Free automatically.
- Nothing is deleted — pages, spaces, and attachments are all preserved, even if they exceed Free's limits.
- Your AI allowance drops to Free's 50 answers/month and your Atlas source cap drops to 1 — existing sources keep their generated pages; you just can't add past the Free caps.
- Adding new uploads is blocked once you're over Free's storage backstop. The API returns
quota_exceeded(HTTP 402) for capped operations.
[!TIP] Changed your mind? Resubscribing before the period ends cancels the scheduled cancellation and keeps you on the paid tier without interruption. Go to Settings → Plan & Usage → Manage subscription.
What's preserved after downgrading to Free
| After downgrade to Free | |
|---|---|
| Existing spaces, pages, attachments | Kept — even past Free's caps |
| Adding new pages & spaces | Always allowed (unlimited on every tier) |
| AI answers / month | Reduced to 50 |
| Atlas sources | Existing ones kept; can't add past 1 |
| New file uploads | Blocked once over Free's storage backstop |
| Public spaces | Available on every plan |
Quotas gate new growth, not existing data.
Downgrading to a lower tier
There's no direct tier-swap flow. To move from a paid tier to a lower one (for example Team → Free or Personal → Free):
- Cancel the current subscription — access continues to the period end.
- Let the period expire — the account drops to Free automatically.
- Optionally re-subscribe to a different tier from Settings → Plan & Usage.
Org seat billing
On the Team plan the subscription seat count updates automatically as members join or leave (tela syncs it to Polar after each membership change, and re-reconciles on every renewal). The change takes effect on the next invoice at the prorated amount Polar calculates.
